The Learning Salon
The Learning Salon grew up from our teachers' experience working with schools and students in Shanghai, China. While there was a huge demand for classes in English, all we ever seemed to encounter were the same old rote-learning programs. These focused on "teaching to the test", and while our students had no trouble scoring "A"s on their multiple-choice tests, we couldn't help but notice that few of them ever really learned to read, write, or speak well, even after years of such lessons.

We decided something new was needed, so we started to design our own course concepts. Communication is a skill; it's not something we can simply memorize. To build a skill, we must practice it in context. So we created lessons that let kids use their communication skills to solve unique and engaging problems.

We started with a business-startup simulation, and encouraged by our students' passionate engagement, added DIY-film projects, improvisational acting, classes in speech giving, travel blogging, exhibit design, and citizen science. Schools took notice, and soon we were invited to design courses for public schools and training centres as well.
During the COVID19 pandemic, we knew a lot of kiddos where stuck home with little to do and no one to hang out with, so we created the Super Speakers Series to support them and to bring our fun activities and projects to them at home.
The Learning Salon is a small, teacher-owned company that works closely with a select group of students and schools. Because we offer a highly personalized service, space in our courses is limited. But we are growing! We add new Super Speakers classes regularly, and still work with schools to provide bespoke courses and materials.
