Learning Salons originated in eighteenth-century France and were typically organized by women.

They were held in private homes.

Great writers, scientists, and intellectuals were invited to share their knowledge with learners and to participate in lively debate. 

 

These salons represented a democratization of education for people at the time and served as an important cultural and intellectual force.  At salons, learners chose what they wanted to study and participated in designing their educational experiences, creating opportunities that no one else was offering.
